About the Artwork

Green Wheat Field is a painting by Vincent van Gogh, painted in May 1889, shortly after his voluntary admission to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy. The view from his window offered him this wheat field enclosed by hills. Here, the still-green spring wheat gently undulates under a sky combining blue and clouds. The brushwork is vibrant but less tormented than usual - a kind of temporary peace. It is preserved at the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna.
