History of the artwork
The Church of Cassone is one of Gustav Klimt's most serene landscapes. Painted in 1913 during one of his summer stays on the shores of Lake Garda, it depicts the church of the village of Cassone surrounded by cypresses and Mediterranean vegetation. Here, Klimt moves away from his Golden Period to adopt a more contemplative approach: flat areas of color, frontal composition, an atmosphere of tranquility. The blue of the lake and the green of the cypresses create a perfect balance. Held in a private collection.
