About the artwork

Bailey's Beach, Newport is a major work by Childe Hassam (1859-1935), the greatest American Impressionist. Painted in 1901, it depicts the upscale beach of Newport (Rhode Island), a popular resort for American high society during the Belle Époque. Bathers, parasols, the blinding summer light on the sea. Hassam translates the French Impressionist style into the American context with remarkable lightness and freshness.
