A neon-lit diner, an empty street, four figures who do not speak. Edward Hopper's most famous painting as a large landscape fine art print, set in a deep night green taken from the canvas itself.

What does Edward Hopper's Nighthawks show?

A New York diner at night, seen from across the street. Three customers at the counter, a server in white, and the neon light spilling onto the deserted sidewalk. Hopper painted it in 1942, inspired by a restaurant on Greenwich Avenue, without copying it. The original, 33 1/8 x 60 in (84.1 x 152.4 cm), hangs at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Why does the diner have no door?

The window wraps all the way around the counter, and no entrance appears. Your eye stays outside, on the street, like a passer-by at night. It is the detail that makes the scene so strange, and it often only reveals itself once the print is on display.

What makes this fine art print different?

The paper, first. A 200 gsm (80 lb) fine art paper, 0.26 mm thick, matte and uncoated: denser than poster paper, with a soft, glare-free surface. It is FSC certified.

The printing, second: 12 colors instead of the usual 4. That is what does justice to Hopper's shades, the green of the neon, the red of the dress, the deep blue of the street. The file is prepared from the museum's high-definition scan: up close, the weave of the canvas is still visible.

Why a night green border?

The dark green around the artwork is the green of the diner's cornice. It carries Hopper's night past the edge of the painting, where a white border would have stopped it short: the scene seems to emerge from the dark.

Where should you hang Nighthawks?

Its landscape format stands alone above a sofa, a console or a headboard. Its greens and midnight blues suit dark wood, velvet and brass. It is also a gift for anyone who loves New York, film noir or American painting, for Christmas or Father's Day.

Beautiful images deserve beautiful paper

This is a fine art print on 200 gsm paper, 0.26 mm thick, matte and uncoated. Denser than poster paper, its soft surface does not catch the light, and the 12-color printing renders the shades the eye looks for up close.

It is eco-friendly paper from sustainably managed forests, and printed as close to you as possible to shorten transport.

Hanging a piece is not the same as seeing it once. It stays there, you find it again in passing, and the day pauses for a second. It is a moment you give yourself, and offer to those who live with you.
