A wave rising like a claw, three boats caught beneath it, and Mount Fuji, tiny, waiting. Japan's most famous woodblock print as a large landscape fine art print, set in a deep Prussian blue.

What does The Great Wave off Kanagawa show?

Off the coast of Kanagawa, near present-day Yokohama, a huge wave closes over three fishing boats. In the distance, between the troughs, Mount Fuji looks small and perfectly still. Katsushika Hokusai designed it around 1831 to open his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.

Why is the blue so special?

It is Prussian blue, a pigment imported from Europe and still new in Japan at the time. Hokusai made it the color of the sea and of the outlines, which gives the print its depth. The border around the artwork takes up this blue, a shade darker: the wave seems to rise out of the night.

Which impression is this print made from?

From a woodblock impression by the Adachi workshop in Tokyo, which recarves and reprints Edo-period prints using the traditional technique. The design is Hokusai's; the paper, carving and colors keep the grain of a real woodblock print.

What makes this fine art print different?

The paper, first. A 200 gsm (80 lb) fine art paper, 0.26 mm thick, matte and uncoated: denser than poster paper, with a soft, glare-free surface. It is FSC certified.

The printing, second: 12 colors instead of the usual 4, to render the gradations of blue and the grain of the Japanese paper. The file is prepared in very high definition: up close, the fibers of the print are still visible.

Where should you hang The Great Wave?

Its landscape format stands alone above a sofa, a desk or a headboard. Its blues and soft beige suit light wood, linen and off-white walls. It is also a gift for anyone who loves Japan, the sea or woodblock prints, for Christmas or a birthday.

Beautiful images deserve beautiful paper

This is a fine art print on 200 gsm paper, 0.26 mm thick, matte and uncoated. Denser than poster paper, its soft surface does not catch the light, and the 12-color printing renders the shades the eye looks for up close.

It is eco-friendly paper from sustainably managed forests, and printed as close to you as possible to shorten transport.

Hanging a piece is not the same as seeing it once. It stays there, you find it again in passing, and the day pauses for a second. It is a moment you give yourself, and offer to those who live with you.
