Story of the artwork

Johannes Vermeer painted Girl with a Pearl Earring around 1665. It is not a portrait but a tronie: a study of a face, without a commission or an identified model, a common exercise in Dutch Golden Age painting.

The background, now a deep black, was originally a translucent green that time has darkened. The exotic turban and the oversized pearl primarily serve as pretexts for the light. The artwork is housed in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, which acquired it in 1902 for a paltry sum.
