History of the artwork

Paul Cézanne worked on The Large Bathers from 1898 until his death in 1906, never considering it finished. It is the largest canvas of his career and the culmination of a motif he had been exploring for thirty years.

The bodies are not described but constructed using colored planes, and the leaning trunks form a triangle that encloses the scene. This way of treating the figure as a geometric volume directly paved the way for Cubism: Picasso and Braque would claim it. The work is housed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Why did Cézanne's The Large Bathers influence Cubism?

In The Large Bathers, painted between 1898 and 1906, Paul Cézanne constructed bodies using colored planes rather than drawing, treating them as geometric volumes integrated into the landscape. Picasso and Braque claimed this approach as the starting point for Cubism. The canvas is housed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
