Story of the artwork

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American painter and naturalist who developed the theory of animal camouflage. This tiger painting, created around 1900, directly illustrates his research: the animal blends into its environment, its stripes mimicking the shadows of tall grasses. Thayer published these findings in his treatise Concealing Coloration in the Animal Kingdom (1909), which influenced military camouflage strategies. A work that is both scientific and artistic.
