A swirling sky, a cypress dark as a flame, a village asleep under the stars. Van Gogh's most famous painting as a large landscape fine art print, set in the near-black green of its cypress.

Where did Van Gogh paint The Starry Night?

In June 1889, from the window of his room at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The village in the foreground was not in that view: Van Gogh added it, with a steeple that recalls the churches of his native Holland. The original, 29 x 36 1/4 in (73.7 x 92.1 cm), has hung at the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1941.

What does the swirling sky tell?

Neither an observation nor quite a dream. The crescent moon, the haloed stars and the spirals of wind make a night seen from within. The cypress in the foreground links earth and sky like a dark flame.

Why a night green border?

The near-black green around the artwork is the green of the cypress. It carries Van Gogh's night past the edge of the painting, where a white border would have stopped it short: the sky seems to open out of the dark.

What makes this fine art print different?

The paper, first. A 200 gsm (80 lb) fine art paper, 0.26 mm thick, matte and uncoated: denser than poster paper, with a soft, glare-free surface. It is FSC certified.

The printing, second: 12 colors instead of the usual 4, to render the blues, the yellows and the thickness of the paint. The file is prepared from a very high definition scan of the painting: up close, every brushstroke is still legible.

Where should you hang The Starry Night?

Its landscape format stands alone above a sofa, a console or a headboard. Its deep blues suit dark wood, velvet and brass. It is also a gift for anyone who loves Van Gogh, Provence or summer nights, for Christmas or Mother's Day.

Beautiful images deserve beautiful paper

This is a fine art print on 200 gsm paper, 0.26 mm thick, matte and uncoated. Denser than poster paper, its soft surface does not catch the light, and the 12-color printing renders the shades the eye looks for up close.

It is eco-friendly paper from sustainably managed forests, and printed as close to you as possible to shorten transport.

Hanging a piece is not the same as seeing it once. It stays there, you find it again in passing, and the day pauses for a second. It is a moment you give yourself, and offer to those who live with you.
